Franklin County,
Nebraska Newspapers
Including transcriptions and scannings from the
Franklin County Guard aka the Bloomington Guard (1874)
and microfilms available through the
Nebraska State Genealogy Society (NSGS)
Jerre Chumley from Palm Coast, Florida has been working with Rena Donovan from Bloomington, Nebraska. The two of them have worked together on older Franklin County Newspapers. Jerre has scanned in and transcribed some of the great old newspapers Rena has supplied him with. Below are the results of their work. A BIG THANK YOU to both Jerre and Rena for this contribution to the Franklin County Web Page!
Below are Word (.doc) and searchable Adobe PDF files containing transcriptions from "The Franklin County Guard" and .jpg files containing several of the clearer advertisements in the same paper. Date of first publication was May 7, 1874. On October 1st, 1874, the newspaper changed it's name to "The Bloomington Guard."
Columns that appeared to be fairly standard on all publications through 1876:
- Local Matters was centered around Franklin County, while
- State Matters appeared to focus on State issues that affected Franklin County.
Also included is what appeared to be the Topic of the Week (Our Water Power).
Please note there were numerous misspelled words, erroneous grammar, etc. in the newspaters, but we left the articles intact, transcribing verbatim. Jerre did, on several occasions, include a "(sic)" so the reader would know it was a published error rather than a typing error.
