St. Charles Pioneer Cemetery

1861

Located southwest of West Point in Section 8 in St. Charles Township

When Alois Drueke emmigrated from Germany to America he claimed a homestead one mile north of the present church in St. Charles. A friend who had come to stay with him became ill and subsequently died. Since no plot of ground was laid out as a cemetery at that time, a grave was dug in an area of grassland on the eastern slope of the Drueke farm. This was the start of the first cemetery in St. Charles township. There are many unidentified graves. Among the identified dead known to be interred there in the years immediately following are:

William Fischer
infant son of Anton Fischer

Frank Goeken
three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Goeken

Anna Kaup
Mrs. Joseph Kaup
and two of her children who perished in a prairie fire

Mrs. Gertrude Knievel

Alois Drueke
he began the cemetery
