SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 50
COLFAX COUNTY, NEBRASKA


District 50 was organized in 1879 and located on the northwest corner of Section 12 (two miles west of Howells on old Highway 91). The land, 10 rods square, was given by E.A. Perry, for which he paid $5. L.A. Kimball made a motion which carried, to build a school house 14 by 18 and nine feet high.

The April 7, 1879, minutes showed: cash on hand $173.35; incidental expenses $37.46; teachers fund $60.56 and building fund $74.53.

Frank Firmon, Frank Telecky and W.A. Perry were elected to the building committee. A motion carried to have the school house finished by the first of October 1879 and to have school during October, November and December. $3.00 per thousand was allowed for hauling lumber.

S. J. Coventry was the first teacher. His term was to commence on the 17th day of November 1879. The school board agreed to keep the schoolhouse in good repair and to provide the necessary fuel, and to pay said teacher for the said services as a teacher to be faithfully and truly rendered and performed the sum of $75. The wages were to be paid on or before the first day of February 1880 provided the teacher finished the term.

Lyn Lerch was the last pupil to graduate from the eighth grade in 1955.
