The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:


May 10, 1956 - reprinted November 4, 2015

Larry Mackenstadt, University of Nebraska student from Leigh, will appear with Vera Zorina, internationally known state and screen actress and dancer, in the musical drama, "Joan of Arc" at the University of Nebraska Coliseum, May 13 at 8:00 p.m.
    The production will include five professional soloists, four narrators, a 500-voice University chorus, and a 70-piece orchestra. Also taking part in the program will be the Boys' Town Choir.

Orville Lindell, vocation agriculture instructor at Leigh High School the past three years has resigned to Ames, Iowa where he will be the Education Director of the Iowa Institute of Cooperation.
    Woodrow Goins, presently the Veteran instructor at Clarkson, will teach Voc. Ag. for the coming year. He attended Oklahoma A & M and graduated in the upper ten percent of his class.

The American Legion Auxilliary of Creston met at the home of Mrs. Minnie Barrett with Mrs. Darlene Bachman as cohostess.
    The meeting was called to order by the president. After the business meeting the Americanism essays were read. The topic was "What Americanism means to me:" First place went to Jeanne Koesch and second to Sharon Kratochvil.

Rudolph "Bud" Jenny of Madison, 22 year old pre theological senior at Midland College, Fremont, has been named the winner of a Fullbright Award to study in Germany the coming school year.
    Announcement of the award came from the Department of State. Jenny will study Theology at Ebarhard, Germany for the coming academic year.


May 17, 1956 - reprinted November 11, 2015

Sunday, May 20, will be an important day at St. Paul's Lutheran church southwest of Leigh. The 75th anniversary of the church will be celebrated with an appropriate program throughout the day.
    The 10:00 morning service will feature the Rev. Martin Schroeder D.D. of Lincoln, who was pastor of St. Paul's church prior to 1927.
    Other former pastors, the Rev. J.A. Bahnsen, now at Hastings and the Rev. Martin G. Schroeder of Grand Island will speak in the afternoon and evening services at 2:30 and 8:00.
    Special music for the services will be furnished by three choirs, the junior and senior choirs of St. Pauls church and an Anniversary choir made up of many former choir members.
    Dinner and an afternoon coffee will be served.

The Rev. Kenneth Carl addressed the seniors of Leigh High School at Baccalaureate Sunday evening ...

Duffy Belohrad and his orchestra will play for a free dance at the Leigh Memorial auditorium on Thursday, May 17, honoring the Leigh High School seniors. The public is invited.


May 24, 1956 - reprinted November 11, 2015

The Philip Morris Merchandising Award is given at the conclusion of each college year to the outstanding student representatives of the company in recognition of exceptional initiative in the performance of assigned campus duties. The awards signify that the student has distinguished himself while gaining valuable practical business experience as a representative of the company. In addition, they also serve as a valuable recommendation of the ability of the person holding the Award Certificate.
    Among the students receiving the 1955-56 award is Lester R. Woodward, Leigh, Nebrska.
    He is a student at Harvard Law School Majoring in Law.
