The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:


Februry 17, 1955 - reprinted March 18, 2015

Eighteen members of the Country Club in Creston, their husbands and children enjoyed their annual banquet and party Friday evening at the Presbyterian church basement.
    The two course dinner was served at long tables. After the dinner games were enjoyed by the group.

In a Tuesday night contest, Creston took a 51-7 halftime lead and went on for an 89-35 trimuph over Monroe. Kenny Brandt poured in 43 points for the Ramblers, and Hill led Monroe with 13.
    Creston owns a 9-9 record going into Class D tournament action.

Residents of Leigh can do their share to fight heart disease by sending their Heart Fund contributions to "Heart", in care of the local postmaster.
    Heart Fund Drives have been in progress since February 1 in some 200 communities in Nebraska. The Nebraska Heart Fund Drive ends February 28 with the hopes of raising $100,000.
    Heart disease is our biggest health problem. It caused 53% of all the deaths in Nebraska-more than all other diseases combined.

Mr. and Mrs. Arlan Ehlers returned to Leigh last Thursday after a year's service in Germany. The troop transport on which they made the return trip embarked on Febr. 2 and docked in New York on Febr. 11.
    They have been Stationed in Strasbourg Kaserne, which is near Idar-Oberstien, Germany.
    They have made no definite plans for the future other than the decision to make their home on the farm.

The 54th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Motycka was observed on Friday Feb. 18 when their children came in unannounced to spend the evening.
    Cards and visiting provided the entertainment after which lunch was served.
    Present were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Littleman; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Motycka; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ellis; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Motycka, Allan, Shirley and Roger.
    Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Motycka and family of Norfolk were unable to be present by telephoned their good wishes.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Dasenbrock, who celebrate their silver anniversary this year, were the honored couple and were presented with a beautiful gift.


March 17, 1955 - reprinted March 18, 2015

A-1C Quentin M. Reichmuth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reichmuth has recently been assigned to the 3rd AACS Squadron (Mobile).
    Airman Reichmuth graduated from Leigh High School in 1950. After entering the Air Force in July 1952, he attended two control tower operator schools at Keelser AF Base, Miss.
    He served one year overseas in Korea prior to reporting to Tinker Air Force Base where he is presently performing duty as a control tower operator in the world wide Airways and Air Communications Service.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Callies announce the enggement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Bonnie, to Lambert Vacha of Clarkson. The wedding date has been set for April 17th.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rahtz returned last week from a three month winter vacation in the south. They left December 22 for Beloit, Kansas where they spent Christmas.
    From then on they toured leisurely through ten southern states, taking in the sights and visiting relatives in Florida and Arkansas. A five week fishing trip at Port Aranas, Texas and a bus tour of New Orleans proved very enjoyable.

Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Dasenbrock were in Lincoln last Thursday to attend the annual meeting of the Lincoln Dairy Council and the banquet in the evening. Both events were held at Hotel Cornhusker.
    They were accompanied by Mrs. Rolland Shoultz and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Vasek.
    The latter attended the Clarkson-Hartington basketball game at the University of Nebraska coliseum.

Talented students provided entertainment for the people of the community at the Declamatory Contest held on March 7 and 8 at the Leigh Public School Auditorium. Because of the forty students participating it was necessary to have the contest run for two nights.
    Winners were:
    Douglas Hobel, Humorous reading; Corine Barjenbruch, Dramatic reading; Judy Stevens, Poetry; Tom Kumpf, Radio Broadcasting; Glady Marty, Oration.
    And the humorous One-Act Play directed by Mrs. H.J. Luchtel.
    On March 25 these people will participate in the District Contest which will be held at Howells, Nebraska.


March 17, 1955 - reprinted March 25, 2015

Friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Herink gave them a housewarming party at their new home Sunday evening. The evening was spent at cards and visiting, after which lunch was served. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Folken, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Belohrad and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Thalken and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sayers, Mr. and Mrs. John Bahns, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bahn and Linda, Mr. and Mrs. John Dobes, Mr. and Mrs. George Urban and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Bhns, Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Thalken and fammily, Mr. and Mrs. John Herink, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Sucha, Mrs. [sic] and Mrs. Clyde Sucha and George and Willis Sayers.


March 24, 1955 - reprinted March 25, 2015

About 30 relatives and friends planned a surprise and gathered at the Henry Wiechen home on Sunday March 13 to celebrate Mr. and Mrs. Wiechen's 18th wedding anniversary.
    A beautiful cake was baked and decorated by Mrs. Emil S. Hledik for the occasion.

Regina Spanhake entertained at a party in her home, Friday evening. Guests were the high school students in the casts of the two, One-Act Plays presented at the recent declamatory contest. Also invited were Mr. and Mrs. William Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Luchtel and Miss Bonnie Jelinek.
    Games and charades and impromptu band concert and dancing to records made up the evening's entertainment, after which refreshments were served.

The 76th birthday of Mrs. Lizzie Loseke was celebrated on March 16 when relatives joined with her for the evening.
    After the social evening lunch was served. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Reinold Loseke, Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Loseke and Katherine, Richland; Mrs. Hulda Kumpf, Columbus; Mr. and Mrs. Helmuth Loseke and Beverly, Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kumpf and Linda, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kumpf, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Kumpf and Reinhold Loseke all of Leigh.

Relatives and friends surprised Mrs. Earl Wendt, Sunday evening, March 13, and on her birthday. Those who were present were: Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wendt and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Reininger and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reininger and son, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Brown and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Deichmann and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mackenstadt, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hunteman, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Grotelueschen, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Grotelueschen and family, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Muhle and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wendt, Mrs. Emma Reininger and Louis Reininger.
    The evening was spent playing cards after which lunch was served by the vistors.


March 31, 1955 - reprinted March 25, 2015

Zion Lutheran Mixed Choir under the direction of H.E. Grabau will make a television appearance over station KOLN-TV in Lincoln on Sunday afternoon, April 3, at 4 o'clock.
    The thirty minute telecast will feature the 40 voice choir in a program of varied music from the season of the church year.
    Pastor Bernard Gerdes will appear as narrator with the choir.
    Jack Einkopf, Leigh's druggist was an unfortunate traveler in last Sunday's blizzard. He had spent Sunday at Stanton and was returning to Leigh by way of Norfolk, taking Highway 81 south of Humphrey where he turned east on 91. His car became stalled in a drift about a half mile from Club 81. He walked the distance back to the Club but was unable to find anyone there. He took refuge in an outside telephone booth where he spent the next hour while the operator from Norfolk tried to get him help. When she finally succeeded in awakening Bruno Labenz, Mr. Einkopf had already started to walk to the Labenz farm.
    Mr. Labenz and family welcomed him to the farm. We are glad to report that he suffered no ill effects from the experience.

The last regular meeting of the Colfax County Teachers Association was held Thursday evening at Schuyler. The entire faculty of the Leigh Public Schools was present as well as Mrs. Tony Van Ampting and Miss Ramona Reichmuth, rural teachers from this area.
    Election of officers for the coming year was the main item of business and the following were selected: Fred Pokorny, Howells, president Steven Price, Schuyler, secretary; Carl Nelson Schuyler, treasurer; and Mrs. Madge Larson, Clarkson, and Ernest Smallwood, Howells, were elected as members of the executive board.
    Following the business session, a program of piano and pantomine routines was presented by the Rev. and Mrs. Don Marsh of Schuyler.


April 7, 1955 - reprinted April 1, 2015

Churches throughout the world celebrated Palm Sunday with many special ceremonies. Confirmation of catechism classes was a special feature of the services t St. John's Lutheran church in Leigh and at the two rural parishes, St. Pual's Lutheran and Christ Lutheran.
    The people confirmed in each church are as follows: St. John's Lutheran, the Rev. L.C. Weitzenkamp pastor: Janet, Blum, nancy Dasenbrock, Robert Ehlers, Edith Fiala, Marjorie Folken, Jeanette Hamann, Beverly Neuhaus, Judith Polenz, James Severin and Carolyn Webber.
    Confirments at Christ Lutheran the Rev. Martin Bornemann, pastor were: Shirley Loseke, Olive Ann Bakenhus, Opal Behrens, Ralph Groteluschen, Duane Henke, Arnold Stutham, Robert Bennefeld, dale Inselman, David Hollman and Ronnie Cattau.
    In the confirmation class of St. Paul's Lutheran, the Rev. W.F.V. Churchill, pastor, were: Lorna Brock, Runo Mohsen, John Sander and Wayne Thalken.

Two of the eight babies who were baptized at the Palm Sunday services of the New Zion Presbyterian church at Clarkson by the Rev. Dr. John E. Fiinger were from the Leigh community. They were Richard Charles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chares Machacek and Monica Antonia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Musil.

Mrs. Harold Mohnsen, Andrewa and Rosalind returned last Tuesday from a two week visit in Washington D.C. Mr. Mohnsen met them in Omaha. They spent the time with the Peter Clausen Jr. family and did a great deal of sightseeing. They visited Mount Vernon, and the government buildings and watced the Senate in session.
    The famed Cherry Blossoms were just coming into bloom and were a lovely sight.

Mrs. Otto Littleman, Creston, was hostess to the Canasta Club Monday evening. Mrs. Wilma Henke won first prize, Mrs. Otto Pieper won low prize, and Mrs. Luedke won the traveling prize.
    Mrs. Littleman served chicken salad, wafers and coffee for lunch.


April 14, 1955 - reprinted April 1, 2015

An educational bus trip for rural school students of Stanton county, the first to be offered in the county, will be taken on Thursday, April 14.
    The ninety-nine pupils accompanied by twenty-four teachers and County Superintendent Bess J. Waring, will go to Lincoln to visit places of interest there.
    The group will travel in three chartered buses. Their schedule calls for visits to the State Historical Society Museum and Art Galleries, the capitol building to witness the Legislature in session and Antelope Park.
    Individual expenses will be paid by each child. The noon meal will be a sack lunch and the evening meal will be in Lincoln.
    Members of the committee of rural teachers who organized the tour were: Ruth Koch, Chairman; Marilynn Petersen, Margerie Prawitz, Bonnie Callies, Lois Fiala, Lorraine Benson and Betty Hemernik.

For the first time in several years all families in the "Round Robin" of friends were able to be together. They joined, Sunday evening, to honor Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hunt of Laramie, Wyo., Easter visitors in Leigh, and to have a housewarming party for Mr. and Mrs. Otto Nelson at the Nelson home. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Trojan, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stevens, Bob and Judith, and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Wullshleger.

The Salk vaccine against polio has passed all the required tests and is now a licensed product.
    All parents of school children in the first and second grades of the public and parochial schools in the county were sent letters explaining the proposed vaccination program.
    Shots will be given in the high schools in Clarkson, Leigh and Howells.
    First shot: Thursday, April 21, 8-10 a.m.
    Second shot: April 28, 8-10 a.m.
    Third shot: May 26, 8-10 a.m.
    The vaccine is free, furnished by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. However, there will be a charge of $1.00 for each shot to defray the expense of administering the vaccine.

Henry Rosicky Jr., has been distinguishing himself as a pole vaulter at Wayne State Teacher's College.
    On April 5th at a meet in Seward against Concordia, he placed first with a jump measuring 11 feet, five and five-eighth inches.

Gordon Hobza, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bohous Hobza of Dodge, was named Dodge County spelling champion at the county contest held last Saturday in Fremont. He won first place in the oral competition and second place in the written test.
    Gordon is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hobza of Leigh.

Judith Stevens was a guest soloist at the New Zion Presbyterian Church, Vesper Services in Clarkson, Friday evening, April 8. There choirs, numbering about 57 voices united to present an inspiring Good Friday musical service. Mrs. Charles Novotny is the director.

A large audience attended the Easter Sunrise Service at the Lutheran Church in Creston. Special music was furnished by the choir.
    There were 97 present at the breakfast at 7:30. Fruit juice, bacon and eggs, rolls and toast, and coffee were served by the Luther League.

The Sew and Chat Club met at the home of Mrs. Fred W. Severin Tuesday afternoon, April 5, with ten membbers and four visitors present. The visitors were Mrs. Joe Hamernik Jr., Mrs. Adam Fuhr, Mrs. F.C. Severin and Mrs. Wm. Fuhr.
    Officers for the coming year were elected. They are: Mrs. Fred W. Severin, president; mrs. Edna Wendt, vice president; and Mrs. Elise Busse, secretary and treasurer. mrs. Art Watchorn won the door prize, and Mrs. John Ehlers Jr. the contest's prize.
    The May meeting will be with Mrs. Art Watchorn.
