The Leigh World publishes a weekly column entitled Looking Back at the World, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Leigh World files. A special thank you to the Leigh World for allowing me to reprint those articles. The following are selections from that column:

May 30, 1905 - reprinted February 6, 2002

While engaged in shelling corn on his farm a mile north of town, Joseph Tomes caught his left hand in the drive chain of the sheller and had the index finger so badly crushed that it was necessary to amputate it. Dr. Allen did the work, and Joe is now getting along as well as could be expected under the circumstance. Joe seems to be fated to go through life without an index finger, for some years since he lost the one on his right hand.

Markets in May 1905: Wheat 72 to 80c, rye 58c, corn 36 1/2c, oats 24c, eggs 12c, butter, 13c, hogs $4.65 to 4.75.
