PEEKING INTO THE PAST (March, 1919)
By The Colfax County Press
Colfax County, Nebraska

The Colfax County Press publishes a weekly column entitled Peeking into the Past, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Colfax County Press files, written by Helen C. Evans. A special thank you to the Colfax County Press for allowing me to reprint those articles! The following are selections from that column:

March 8, 1919 - reprinted May 1, 1991

Anton Lopour purchased the John F. Zrust 120 acres, 5 miles south of this place, paying $114 per acre for it. The price was very reasonable considering the quality of land.

Jos. Krahulik discontinued the confectionery and stationery business that for years has been conducted in connection with the Clarkson postoffice, and the entire building is now being used for the postoffice.

Secret organizations in Clarkson seem to be building up membership at a rapid rate, and the Modern Woodmen don’t propose to be outdone. At a meeting of their camp, they initiated 7 new members and at their next meeting 22 more names will be added to the long list of local wood-choppers.

John Hamernik is putting up out-Gregory [sic], S. D. and he is so well pleased with that country that he has concluded to move there.

Gus Koza and Jos. F. Jirovec left on a trip to South Dakota, where the latter may conclude to locate if pleased with the country.

John V. Bos returned from a trip to buildings and will soon commence the erection of a good-sized residence on the property he owns in Suchy's addition.

Jos. Zvacek and wife left for their new home in Thurston county, where Ed purchased a farm some months ago. His mother went up with them to assist them in getting settled.

While Frank Novotny of Stanton county was moving onto the farm he purchased on the Marshall Field ranch, he had a horse take sick and die on the road. He had refused $300 for the animal.

There is to be a large addition to the membership of the Tel. Jed Sokol lodge at this place in the near future, as a bustling committee is now engaged in getting applications for memberships. Up to the present time a few more than 40 applications have been written.

Anton Fajman, who was formerly engaged in the butcher business here, but has been living in Dodge for some years, moved up from the latter place onto a farm he owns 11 miles north of this place.

The Z.C.B.J. lodge of this place is making arrangements for a big time at a meeting and banquet to be held next Sunday afternoon and evening, the occasion being the taking into the Clarkson lodge of the members, 17 in number, who formerly belonged to the Svododna Obec Lodge No. 60, which, for years, has been meeting at the Sousek schoolhouse in northern Midland precinct, but which now ceases to exist. The Clarkson lodge is now the strongest in Nebraska, having a membership of 315.

Ed Noh took George Anderson and his force of carpenters out to his Midland precinct farm where, for some weeks, they will be engaged in the erection of a large barn. Ed had the basement dug and the foundation walls laid last fall. The barn is to be 30x60 feet with 20-foot studding and an 8-foot basement under the entire structure. Such barns are becoming quite popular in this section of the country and they certainly are a great thing for the farmers who can afford to build them.
