The Colfax County Press publishes a weekly column entitled Peeking into the Past, which is comprised of articles taken from earlier Colfax County Press files, written by Helen C. Evans. A special thank you to the Colfax County Press for allowing me to reprint those articles! The following are selections from that column:


February 13, 1906 - reprinted September 23?, 1981

A fine new organ was placed in the Roman Catholic church here and was used for the first time at the Sunday morning services.

Joseph Suchy, Sr., died at his home after an illness of some weeks with stomach trouble. He is survived by his wife, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Funeral services were held Sunday with pastor, Rev. Swoboda, assisted by Rev. Losa assisting at the New Zion Church.

Rev. Zak said the words that made Herman A. Willgohns and Mary Cerv husband and wife at the Catholic church here.


February 20, 1906 - reprinted September 30, 1981

Clarkson Milling Co. installed an electric light plant at the mill and now when they have night work to do the building will be lighted by electricity.

A party was given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Faltys at Tomes Bros. hall, which was largely attended by their friends. Music was furnished by the Clarkson Band.

Material is being got on the ground to be used in the building of a new bridge across Maple Creek just east of town. The old bridge has been unsafe for a year or more and those who have to cross it will be pleased to see it replaced with a new and safe structure.


February 27, 1906 - reprinted Octobery 7, 1981

Louis Cada and wife have a little son at their home south of town, born last Thursday.

Adolf Tomes sold his residence property in the south part of town to Jos. Rozmarin for $2,160.

Theodore Bruntz and his mother, Mrs. Albert Taylor sold their 160 acre farm in Midland precinct to Henry Huff, Jr., for $30 per acre. This is the top price for land in this area at this time.

Mrs. Joseph Teply purchased of Emil Slama the lot on the corner just west of Chleboun Bros. store, paying for the same $315. She has let a contract for the erection of a neat cottage.

There was a double wedding at the courthouse in Schuyler, where County Judge Mapes officiated and in which some of our prominent young people took the principal parts. Frank Prazak and Bohumila Fillipi and Anton Rysavy and Josie Fillipi drove to the county seat and were wed quietly.

J.D. Wolf purchased of Vaclav Podany the lots owned by him, just south of the Catholic Church for $650.00.
