Mr. Smith was graduated from Schuyler High School in 1908. He was a musician, an organist at the Methodist Church for many years, and a pianist. He taught in rural schools in the Schuyler area, and in a number of Nebraska town schools before going to Montana.
In 1934, he was named co-ordinator of music for all the CCC camps in the Glacier Park area with headquarters in Missoula, Mont. On one occasion he was given a Presidential Citation for outstanding service by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was present at a concert given by his group. At that time Mrs. Roosevelt autographed Mr. Smith's baton.
He was a veteran of World War I, and during part of his service he was in charge of the School of Development at Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
In 1936 he married Mrs. Helen Merscheid, owner of a floral business at North Platte, Nebr. They have lived in California the past 15 years, first at Richmond and at San Jose at the time of his death.

At the time of his death he was an active member of the San Jose Philharmonic Society.
