Page 3 - Dry Creek Cemetery Adolf Sedlacek 1852 1906 Unmarked graves - information from the book ‘History of Czechs in Nebraska' by Rose Rosicky, page 437 Child of John Vobornik Children of the following: Dvorak Rubes Kovar Sudik Zmotany Dry Creek Cemetery in Midland Precinct, Colfax County, Nebraska, was established on February 12, 1876, in a meeting held at the home of John Kovar, who donated 5 acres of land for that purpose. Kovar, born in Kolec, Moravia, May 12, 1834, had come to the com- munity of Dry Creek in the year of 1874 accompanied by 5 sons, Edward, Frank, John, Anton, and Joseph. He owned 120 acres of land north of Schuyler and so his gift of 5 acres may have seemed just a small portion of land to him, but to other settlers in the area who felt the need for both a burial plot and erection of a house of worship, it was an important 5 acres. Other founders of the cemetery association besides John Kovar, were Frank Polak, Martin Svacina, Jacob Krula, Matej Dobry, Vaclav Sudik, Felix Sevcik, Joseph Valenta, Joseph Krenek, Martin Palik, John Vobornik, and Joseph Houfek. The following were elected trustees: John Kovar, Matej Dobry and Vaclav Sudik. Later as news of the association spread and more families came to the area the following also joined: Joseph Hajek, Karel Benes, Joseph Riha, Frank Dvorak, Frank Cech, John Nozicka, John Dvorak, Joseph Krejci, Joseph Coufal, John Zahradnicek, Cyril Kuzel, Martin Ryget, Anton Votava, Jacob Mares, Frank Roupetz. At first the cemetery association was inter-denominational until 1879 when members began to state their religious preferences and divided into two major groups, Catholic and non-Catholic. At that time some dissension arose and got worse when the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary Church was built in 1881. The ruling majority which were Catholic decided that all who did not belong to the church lost their membership in the cemetery association and their burial rights. As a result, many of the bodies were re- moved and re-burial took place at other cemeteries which were either strictly Protestant or inter-denominational.
