Irene M. (Ronkar) Barnes 1906-1983

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene M. Barnes of Utica, formerly of Seward, were held Tuesday morning, May 3, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Seward, with Father Clarence Reisdorff officiating. Mrs. Barnes died April 30 at Bethesda Care Center, Utica following a lengthy illness.  Pallbearers were Keith Markle, Max Anstine, Henry Imig, Emil Fritz, Tom Rea and Joe Kral. Burial was in the Seward Cemetery.   Irene Ronkar, daughter of Henry and Susanna (Schmit) Ronkar, was horn near Bellwood on April 26, 1906. She graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing and was employed as a registered nurse at David City Hospital in the early 1930s.  She was married to Lee Marion Barnes on May 29, 1937, at Seward, where they lived until she entered Bethesda Care Center in, 1975.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother. Survivors include her two children, Mrs. Lynn (Carol) Hofer of Staplehurst and Jim Barnes of Pueblo, Colo. three sisters,. Mrs. Emil (Agnes) Medinger of Octavia, Mrs. Mary Demuth of David City, and Mrs. Virgil (Mildred) Beck of Denver and five grandchildren.

Death of Jacob Beringer
Pioneer Had Reached Advanced Age of Nearly 92 Years

Jacob Beringer, pioneer resident of Butler county, passed away at his home in north David City at 10 o'clock Tuesday evening, May 27, after illness of about a month with complications due to his advanced age of nearly 92 years. A son of Willam and Mary Beringer, he was born November 1, 1849, at Lintgen, Luxemburg, and came to America in 1869, residing in Iowa. On February, 1876, he was married in Cascade,. Iowa, to Susanna Schmit. They lived in Iowa for seven years, coming to Nebraska in 1883 and locating on a farm two miles southeast of Bellwood, which was their home for 35 years until t they retired from active farm life and moved to David City in 1918. Mrs. Beringer died November 16, 1927.  Nine children, four daughters and five sons, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Beringer. One son died in infancy. The Surviving children are Mrs. Margaret Steiner Genoa, Mrs. Catherine Meysenburg, Nicholas Beringer, Henry Beringer, Jacob Beringer, Jr., and Miss Mary Beringer of David City and Mrs. Anna Besch and Peter Beringer of Bellwood. There were 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Catholic Church, David City, at 9:30 o'clock Friday morning with solemn requiem mass conducted by Rev. W. A. Murphy celebrant, Rev. D. B. O'Connor of Bellwood deacon, Rev. Charles Rada of Appleton sub-deacon and Rev.. John. F. Hennessey of David City master of ceremonies. Music was by Sister Mary Clara and the school choir.  The pallbearers were Hiller Smith, Jake Smith, C. J. Schmit, Peter L. Smith, Jacob Demuth and Andrew Beringer, nephews of the deceased. Burial was in St Mary's and St. Peters cemetery, Bellwood.  All of Mr. Beringer's children and families were present at the funeral, except Mrs. Steiner, who is critically ill at her home in Genoa. Others present from elsewhere were Mr. And Mrs. Peter Koob of Cascade, Iowa, N. M. Steiner of Genoa, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Straka of Lincoln and Mrs. Mary Janicek of Omaha.  Mr. Beringer was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic church. He was industrious and enterprising, a good husband and father, and made many friends during his lifetime. He especially enjoyed his home life and took pride in beautifying his yard. His daughter, Miss Mary, was his companion and cared for him faithfully and devotedly in his last years.

Matthew Jakob Besch, Jr. 1917-1948

Matt J. Besch, 31, died Sunday, Oct. 3, at St. Joseph hospital, Omaha, following illness of two years. He had been hospitalized for six weeks, during which time he was administered the latest medical treatments.  Mr. Besch was a son of Mrs. Anna Besch and the late Matt P. Besch. He attended a Catholic school at Humphrey and following his graduation from high school and death of his father in 1934, he had been farming the Besch land near Bellwood. Possessed of considerable musical ability, he played in various orchestras.  He was married to Agnes Hilger June 3, 1941, the marriage taking place in St. Mary's Catholic church in David City. Mrs. Besch survives him, as do three children, Matt, Jr. 8, Timothy 3, Patricia 2, also his mother Mrs. Anna Besch, and two brothers, Francis of Columbus and Kieran of Longmont, Colo. He was preceded in death by his father, Matt P. Besch, three brothers and one sister.  Funeral services for Mr. Besch were held Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic church with Msgr. 0. B. 0'Connor officiating.  The Rev. Max DeWitt assisted in the rites. Music was by St. Peter's church choir. Burial was in the Luxemburg Catholic cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Leo Adamy, Carroll Beringer, Henry Ebel, Jr., Cyril Meister, Peter Nicolas, Jr., and Jerome Ronkar The Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus, of which he was a member, attended the services in group.  Those attending from elsewhere were Mrs. William Frey of Humphrey; Vincent and Joe Stevens of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hilger, Mr. Joe Shimek, and Mr.. Harold Morgan of Columbus ;and Mr. and Mr. Wi11iam Kosch and children of Shelby and Mr. and Mrs. Clem Henggler of Lindsey.  Mr. Besch was a devout member of St. Peter's Catholic church. His cheerfulness and loyalty to his friends endeared him to them. He was ever ready to lighten their way and was respected by all who knew him. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral Services For Frank Birkel, Held July 30

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church, David City. July 30, for Frank Birkel, 76, who died at the David City Hospital, July 27, following a brief illness.  Msgr. A. J. Lisko officiated at the services at 9:30 a.m. Music was by Marie Kobza, Dolores Rerucha and Mary Ann Kozisek. Attending services in a body were members of the Knights of Columbus.  Pallbearers were Clarence Birkel, JIm Birkel, William Puetz; Louis Birkel; Victor Birkel and Pete Smith. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.  Mr. Birkel was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Birkel and was born August 18, 1882, in Butler County. He was married, to Anna G. Meysenburg, Nov. 27, 1905. Two children, Agnes and Alfred were born to them. The family lived on a farm near David City, until 1920 when they moved into David City where Mr. Birkel has since resided.  He was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Knights of Columbus.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna.  Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Agnes) Coufal and son, Alfred, both of David City; a brother, Henry Birkel, David City, and sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Puetz of Albion. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Relatives and friends attending. the services from away were from Albion, Fullerton, Fremont, Wahoo, Omaha, Avoca, Hastings, Genoa, Shelby, Sioux City, IA., and Nederland, Tex.
