Early Settlers

Taken from Rock Township History, Benson County 1904-1976

Andrew Markusson (Zetterwall) Zetter

Andrew Markusson Zetter migrated from Jarvso, Sweden to Finley, North Dakota in 1904. The first winter was spent in Black Duck, Minnesota working in a lumber camp. When he came to the Sheyenne area in the spring he assisted his cousin Erick P. Westerlund in the butcher shop. He also worked in the butcher shop for L.B. Garnass of Sheyenne and Ed Schmid of Oberson.

Andrew Zetter and Helga Cecelia Anderson were married in Jarvso, Sweden about 1902. Two children Marie and Iver were born there before Mrs. Zetter came to America to join her husband in 1907. They homesteaded in Rock Township, Section 12, northeast of Sheyenne and later moved into Twin Tree Township.

Nine more children were added to the family all born near Sheyenne. They were: Clarence, Albin, Viola, Oscar, Blenda, Lenore, Rose, Melvin and Elsie. Some of them received their early education in Plainview School NO. 2 in Rock Township but most of the children attended the Lone Tree No. 2 School in Twin Tree. Their son Clarence was the only one of the Zetter children to remain at home. He bought some ofhis father's land and gradually bough additional acres. In 1945 he married Ardys Zetter of Tokio, North Dakota.

Andrew was considered the "local veterinarian" because the neighbors called on him when any animal was sick. His wife, Helga, although busy with her large family somehow managed to find time for her neighbors, giving them some of her delicious home baking, be it a load of bread or some other home baked goods. She had worked in, and owned, a bakery in Sweden prior to her marriage.

Iver Vick

Iver Vick  and his wife Johanna Flore Vick homesteaded in Twin Tree Township. Iver may have worked for the railroad and possibly lived in Sheyenne. They had a daughter Pernilla who married Peter Hanson. In the 1970's Ed and Gen Anderson bought the Vick homestead.

Cemetery

Bourett Family Cemetery is the only cemetery in Twin Tree township and is located in the SW¼ Sec.27.
