Here is a picture of the Stokes Family taken about 1910-1912 two miles east of VanCleve near the Stokes Cemetery. It is the family of John M. Stokes ( my great grandfather) and his wife Permela F. Pendleton (my great grandmother). The two boys are (left to right) Albert Stokes and Archie Elmer Stokes (my grandfather). Girl order is un sure but believed to be Sally, Elsie, Edna, Fannie and Sarah.

Edward S. Stokes and Nancy Ann Evers Family

Edward and Nancy moved to Missouri about 1854 from Tennessee and settled in then Osage county. This part of Osage county was to become Maries county. They lived about two miles east of Van Cleve near the Stokes Cemetery. Edward owned a fair amount of land and operated a country store, one of the largest in that part of Missouri.

EDWARD S. STOKES ,was born April 11, 1811 in GUILFORD county North Carolina, and died November 22, 1889. Burial STOKES CEMETERY. He married NANCY ANN (EANS, EVANS) EVERS December 24, 1833 in Rhea CO, Tennessee. She was born January 25, 1815 in South Carolina, and died February 08, 1903. Burial STOKES CEMETERY.

i. WILLIAM PINKNEY STOKES, b. October 03, 1834 in Meigs Co. Tennessee; d. Feb.2, 1913 in Maries Co. Missouri. Burial Pendleton Cemetery, Maries Co. He married (1) Ameline J. Burd April 12, 1860 (2) Sarah Hughes aft 1882 (3) Caroline Piles Feb. 2 1887.

John M. Stokes and Permela F. Pendleton Family

John and Permela lived near the Stokes Cemetery about 2 miles east of Van Cleve. John was a farmer.

In 1904 property that includes the Stokes Cemetery was transferred, by John, to the county for $1.00

with the stipulation that any Stokes or person who married a Stokes could be burried there. Several

members of this family died from a tuberculosis epidemic.

He married PEMELA FRANCES PENDLETON December 6, 1876 Maries Co. Missouri. She was born January 31, 1859 Osage Co. Missouri, died December 13, 1918 Meta, Osage Co. Missouri. Burial in STOKES CEMETERY ..
