Notes:

Rolen BURNS and Matilda Jane "Milly" Asher were my gggrandparents. Mary Ann (BURNS) BARNES, WATTERS, was my great grandmother.  She married first Isaac Barnes in Miller Co, Mo. and Second Elmer Marion Watters in Camden Co., Mo.   Rolen BURNS was drafted Mar., 8, 1865 at St. Louis, Mo 77th Reg't Inf. Vols. Co. D.under Capt. Henry. d. Jun 23, 1865 at Demopolis, Ala.: When Milly applied for her widow's claim she was denied because the records showed Rolen Burns was absent without leave in Mar and Apr of 1865.  Her file contains a treasure of Gen. Forms of Affidavits from Maries Co., Mo citizens, and letters from Adjutant General's Office, Washington D.C.  Milly persisted for  years to clear her husband's record and rec. the widow's claim due her.   A letter from T.W. Benjamin, Asst. Adjutant Gen., dated May 18, 1876 states;  The Muster Rolls of Co. D. (of the 11th Reg't) contain the following evidence of service.  It is stated that he was drafted March 2,1865 at St Louis, Mo. to serve 1 year........April 6, 1865 the charge of absence without leave is REMOVED.  He was absent on detached service at Fort Gaines and Mobile, Ala. from April 6, 1865 to May 20, 1865.  Roll for May and June 1865 reported he died June 23,1865 of pneumonia at Demopolis,  M.O.R. dated June 15, 1866 reports he died of pneumonia at Demopolis, Ala. June 23, 1865. #189.552

Perhaps a reason for the discrepancy is the second application filed (dated July 25, 1866) placed Rolan BURNS in Co."A" commanded by Capt. (can't read) in the Eleventh  Regiment of Missouri Infantry Vol. commanded by Col Boyer.  This report states Rolen died of "Breast complaint" or consumption.

The above records were obtained by Mary Ann Blackburn, gggrandaughter of Rolen BURNS. Mary Ann Blackburn is the great granddaughter of Nancy M. Burns, youngest dau. of Rolen Burns, married James Green Blackburn.  Mary Ann resides in Birmingham, Al.  Other descendants of JOHN & BARBARY BURNS are James K. SHELTON (shel2@ipa.net), Frank Hatton (papafrank@aol.com) and Bob and Lois Davidson.   Sorry I have lost the Davidson e-mail address.(per msmiller@cal-net.net  using GenBBS 1.14)
