My ancestor Joseph WEST was born in 1731 and married Sarah HILLEARY, born in 1733 they had the following children: Erasmus (my ancestor, born 1760, married Elinor BELT), Thomas Hilleary, Benjamin, Arabella, Elinor Hilleary, Harriet, Anna. His parents were Benjamin WEST (1707-1744) and Susannah STOCKETT. Benjamin's parents were Joseph P. WEST (1663-1731) and Rebecca MEARS. Supposedly they were descendants of a Joseph WEST who came with two brothers on Leonard Calvert's expedition to found Maryland. They could have been in Prince Georges County, as it is mentioned in some family data, although some records suggest other county names that no longer exist. Also, I found some material on the Anne Arundel County MDGenWeb. Would appreciate any further information. Richard Moore rmoore@sunflower.com

I have been trying to find information on DRYDENS in early Maryland that appear to have lived and died in Prince George's and Charles Counties. An old genealogy mentions Henry, George and Thomas DRYDEN as well as James, from London, and another Henry who was buried on Blackiston's Island sometime around 1700. The following was taken from the genealogy. Can anyone tell me anything about these Drydens, where they came from, if they had families? Henry DRYDEN died in Prince George's County, Maryland. His name appears in the Index in numerous testamentary proceedings and the Inventory and Accounting, (Liber XX, Folio 156, 197) indicates that he was not a married man at the time of his death. He lived in that part of Charles County which in 1695 was formed into a new county called Prince George's, County; the latter included all of the western Maryland settlements until Frederick County was formed in 1748. Henry DRYDEN seems to have been a merchant in a place called "Charles Towne" some place in Maryland. Court House records show that he was living on May 26, 1699, but dead on August 27, 1700. Suit by the Administrator of Henry DRYDEN's estate, Timothy MCCALL, against Thomas DUDLEY, defendant, was decided for the defendant whose recital of his transactions with Henry DRYDEN, deceased, discloses business deals involving large capital requirements (Liber B Old Series 2, Folio 61-62). A certain George DRYDEN also lived in Charles County, Maryland, where he died; his Inventory in 1718 is recorded in Liber I, Folio 296; that of his widow, Isabel DRYDEN in 1719, Liber III. Folio 101. It is again a coincidence that in 1891 James DRYDEN sued Philip LYNES for a debt and in 1715, Francis LYNES, deceased, owed George DRYDEN money. Mention of a Thomas DRYDEN of Prince George's County, Maryland, occurs (Deeds F. Folio 183. Upper Marlboro); shows that in 1719 Thomas DRYDEN married Elizabeth BEALL, daughter of Thomas BEALL, In the Debt Book at Annapolis. Thomas DRYDEN's taxes on a tract called "Elizabeth and Thomas" in Prince George's County are listed in 1753. and in 1754 they are charged against "Thomas Dryden's heirs" for the same tract of 109 acres; in 1755 the charge is entered against Elizabeth DRYDEN continuing so until 1771 when the notation is "Eliza Dryden for future George Moore; and in 1772 the charge is "George Moore, Jr., Elizabeth and Thomas, 109 acres." Other records indicate that Thomas lived and died in Prince George's County; that in 1719 his father-in-law presented his wife with certain livestock; that he was a planter in 1721 and a tailor in 1733. He was an old man in 1748 and died between 1749 and 1754. He had two daughters, Elizabeth and Eleanor, of whom Eleanor seems to have married George MOORE, Sr. and of whom Elizabeth, either the widow of Thomas or the daughter, Elizabeth, seems to have married Benjamin MOORE, Sr. The foregoing analyses the records concerning the early DRYDENS of the Western Shore of Maryland. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Ron Dryden dryden@kih.net

After a search of over 20 years, I might have finally had a break through in researching my family lines in Maryland. I'm looking for anyone that might be working on a Benjamin VANHORN who married Charity SANDERS in St. James Protestant Episcopal church in Baltimore on Feb 15, 1791. It would appear they had a son, James born in 1793 and Benjamin might have died in 1795. His wife Charity could have remarried a Michael KELLY on December 20, 1796 in Loudoun, VA (where a bunch of VANHORNS lived that could of been decendants of Gabriel Peter VANHORN). There is also a record of a Charity SANDERS marrying a John KENNEDY on October 24, 1800 in Richmond Co, GA (where some more of the collateral lines to this family I'm looking at resided). His father is possibly Colonel Gabriel Peterson VANHORN (Maryland Militia) who married Mary VAN ZANT (1772). He was born 10/5/1742 Bucks Co, PA and died April 26, 1815 in Vannsville, Prince George's Co, MD. Gabriel's parents were Garbriel VAN HORN (b.1715 d. 1789) and Martha Brelsford. The only FGS I have for this family indicates 4 children (two and two), but the 1790 Maryland fed census (Baltimore) shows 9 males (including Gabriel) in the house, 8 over 16 and 1 under 16; 4 females in the house, and 2 slaves. The 1800 Maryland fed census shows Gabriel living in Prince George's Co with one male over 45 (Gabriel), 1 male 26-45, 1 male 16-26; 1 female over 45, 1 female 16-26, one other free person, and 2 slaves. So I know that Gabriel had quite a larger family than I currently have on my older FGS for him. Is anyone looking at the Benjamin VANHORN/Gabriel Peterson VAN HORN lines in and around Baltimore, MD in the 1780-1800 time frames? I would love to share some additional thoughts and information. Also looking for a VAN HORN researcher that might be able to help with some info in the Baltimore area. I am wondering if anyone can help me with locating the burial places of Thomas & Jane MOORE HOSKINSON, Sr. Thomas HOSKINSON was b. ca. 1679 and he married Jane MOORE abt. 1709 in Rock Creek Parish; Jane MOORE was the daughter of James & Mary MOORE, Sr. Thomas came to America as an Irish linen weaver of Scottish or Northern England descent; the family had originally fled to Ireland to escape religious persecution.
