Le Pays des FLEURS ORANGES
(The Land of Orange Blossoms)

Volume 1 2nd. Edition
Compiled by William R. Stringfield

Released in September, 2001, 582 pages text, indexed with footnotes and a fold-out map.
The book covers the history of several families from their various arrivals in Louisiana,
to when many were settlers in Plaquemines Parish about 1770. After that date, some leave
for New Orleans or further upriver, but most remain for the next 100 years. Several disastrous
events forced several who survived to leave in the next 140 or so years of Plaquemines Parish
history. Many references were church indices, U.S. censuses, colonial censuses, and more recently
newspaper references, and general gleanings of notes from available public records in the area.
Cemetery inscriptions also give some of the dates for individuals listed. The families are organized
by generation from an immigrant or early Louisiana native, and follow each generation as a chapter.
It has six chapters which places the children of the subjects born mainly before 1950, often about
1915-1930 in the last listed chapter.

The map is two-sided, one side  a map of Plaquemines Parish about 1980 for roadway and community
and slightly earlier, for bay, bayou, and other waterway information. The reverse is a Corps of
Engineer map made primarily for soundings in 1893. It listed all farmers along the riverbank, and noted
areas where citrus were the dominant crop. Other tree areas were also noted ( Willow, mixed-wood or
other specific dominant wood) The section was from about Baptiste Collette Bayou to the lowest portion
of Buras, both banks Upper Venice, Boothville, and Triumph, besides the forts.
Among the families featured are, BURAS, (BURAT), BARROIS, COLLETTE, COSS, HEIDEL, FREDERICK,
CAVALIER, DENNIS, (DENESSE), MARTIN, LAFRANCE, DOBARD, DuPLESSIS, DeARMAS, HINGLE, RAGAS,
GAUTHIER, BECNEL, and ROUSSELLE (St. John).

Errors and additions booklet, 64 pages presently, includes additional information most of the families
to Native American origins: BARTHELEMY, SYLVE, ANCAR, ST.ANN, ENCALADE, GASBON, BLAZIO, and
DINET, and several others. Included are two pedigree charts, one six-generation with sibling chart, the
other fifteen generations.
