Swinford Genealogy

James Swinford and his wife Elizabeth, (maiden name unknown) came to Kentucky with a family consisting of at least four sons.  The 1790 reconstructed
census of Kentucky list the surname Swinford in Bourbon County, March of 1790; however, no Swinford deeds are recorded until January 1794.  North
Carolina records indicate this family migrated from the Iredell and Rowan County area. It is supposed James Swinford may have descended from the Maryland
Swinford's; however, this is not fact.  Some Swinford researchers say that James Swinford was elderly when he made the trip to Kentucky and died sometime
around 1800 in Harrison County, Kentucky.

Children of James and Elizabeth Swinford

Elisha Swinford, born 1760 in England and came to Bourbon County in the early 1790's with his wife, Thankful Doane,
who he had married on October 23, 1784 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Thankful was the daughter of Hezekiah and Sarah
Doane.  Elisha Swinford died intestate on January 18, 1813 in Harrison County, Kentucky.

Laura Sauer a Swinford descendant states:
Thankful Doan was born 1764 in Eastham, Barnstable, Mass.  Her parents were Noah Doan & Bethia Doane.  Mayflower lineage
to Thomas Rogers.  Her lineage can also be traced to 940 France, Robert Guiscard Duke of Apulia, son of Tangreed De &
Fredistina Hauteville.

John Swinford, born after 1765. John's first appearance in Kentucky records was on the 1800 tax list for Harrison County.  In
1810 he had a family of five sons under the age of 10, one son 10-15, a wife 26-45 and an older female, perhaps a mother-in-
law, 45 plus.  No marriage has been located for John; same say wife was Elizabeth Harrison.  Six children are known; Matthew,

b: 1800, married Fanny Pollard on September 8, 1825; Elisha, b: 1803; Samuel, b: 1804; Milton, b: 1808, married Deborah Leach
on January 15, 1828; Sarah, b: 1809 and Joshua, born 1810, living unmarried in the household of Lewis Garnett and family in 1850
Harrison County.
John Swinford was still living in Harrison County in 1820; however, he has not been located on an 1830 census.  Some Swinford
researchers say he died in Putnam County, Indiana; however, they may be confusing him with, John Swinford, son of Elisha.
This John went to Putnam County, Indiana.
Joshua Swinford, born July 2, 1762. He married Mary Elizabeth Doane in Rowan County, North Carolina about 1788.  She is
said to have been a sister to Thankful Doane.  Joshua first appeared in Kentucky on the 1793 tax roll for Bourbon County. In
1797 Joshua Swinford and Hezekiah Doane were witnesses to the will of Benjamin Neely.  It has been determined that Benjamin
Neely was a neighbor.  Whether there was other connects, it is not known at this time. He left a will in Harrison County, dated
October 17, 1820 naming wife, Elizabeth; sons, James and John; daughters, Peggy, Jane and Eliza.
James Swinford, probably born in the 1760's first appeared on the 1800 tax list for Harrison County. Nothing is known of his
wife or family.  James may have been the eldest or one of the older children of James and Elizabeth Swinford.  It is very
possible that he was deceased before 1810.  There are two James Swinford's on the 1810 Harrison County census; however,
both are too young to be a brother to Elisha, John or Joshua Swinford; possibly nephews, sons of Elisha or Joshua.
