Theophilis Brawner

Theophilis Brawner, son of Edward Brawner and his first wife, Ann Franklin, was born on February 23, 1789 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland. He served Maryland in the War of 1812. Prior to 1820, along with other members of his family he migrated to Kentucky.  He spent most of his life in Franklin and Shelby counties.  On November 9, 1820 in Shelby County, Kentucky, Theophilis married Rachel Wade, daughter of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones. Rachel Wade was born in Woodford County, Kentucky on May 8, 1801 and died December 21, 1893 in Franklin County, Kentucky.. Theophilis Brawner died on December 17, 1866 in Franklin County.  His will is recorded in Franklin County, Kentucky will BK 3, page 143. All property of every description, he left to his wife Rachel.  No children were named in his will.  However, through other documentation, four children have been proven.The location of burial for Theophilis and Rachel has not been found.

Children of Theophilis Brawner and Rachel Wade

John Edward Brawner, born November 18, 1821 in Franklin County, Kentucky and
died on April 2, 1863.   He married Margaret Ann Pulliam, daughter of William Pulliam
and Cynthia Penn in Oldham County, Kentucky on January 3, 1844. Margaret A. Penn was
born September 10, 1827 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  Her death and burial location is unknown.
John Brawner and Margaret are listed on the 1850 and 1860 Franklin County, Kentucky census with
their children. A Margaret Brawner is named in the will of Charles Penn, Franklin County,
will BK 3, page 32 as my granddaughter Margaret Brawner. Ages reported to census make it very
unlikely this Margaret could be a granddaughter of Charles Penn.
Mary Jane Brawner, born October 10, 1823, probably in Franklin County.  Mary married James D.
Moore on June 18, 1846 in Franklin County, Kentucky.
William Royal Francis Brawner, born September 18, 1825, in Franklin County, Kentucky. His
correct name is not proven. His name appears throughout the records of Franklin County in many
variations;  William F., Willis R. F., Frances and W.R.F.  William married first in Franklin County on

September 8, 1847 to Mahala, born about 1829 in Kentucky, daughter of Gresham Moore and
Ann Holloway.  Four known children were born to this union: Mary Ann, born June 8, 1848: America
Frances, born May 27, 1852: William Squire, born May 27, 1854; John Cable, born September 29, 1856
and Susan Jane, birth not proven. Mahala Moore Brawner died in Franklin County on August 7, 1857 from
Consumption.  William Brawner married second, Mary Belle "Polly" Ellis on October 10, 1859 in Franklin
County and had children; James Thomas, Luvenia, Mahala Belle, Sarah Della, Margaret Alice and
Lizette.  Frances and Mary are listed on the 1900 census of Franklin County, Bald Knob district.
According to Brawner researchers, William Brawner died on August 5, 1905 at the home of Owen Albert
and Lizette Brawner Allison.
Margaret Ann Brawner, born September 7, 1842, in Franklin County, Kentucky.  Theophilis, age 60
and Rachel Brawner, age 49 appear on the 1850 census for Franklin County.  In their household

is Margaret A. Brawner, 8 years of age.  Margaret Ann Brawner became the wife of Charles
William Duvall on January 14, 1862.  Kentucky death certificate #19491 for Margaret A. Duvall states
she was the daughter of Thopolis Brawner and Rachel Wade.  Margaret died on August 26, 1934

and is buried in the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklin County, Kentucky.
