North Family in Franklin County, Kentucky

John W. North was born 1800 in Ireland (acccording to 1850 census).  My mother told me she was told he was Scots-Irish.  On December 30, 1833 John obtained bond to marry Mary "Polly" Warfield, daughter of Vachel and Elizabeth Jackson Warfield.  Polly was born about 1815 in Franklin County and died between March 22, 1854 and March 25, 1855.  Her death was probably related to the birth of her youngest, William.  John died in Franklin County on March 25, 1855 of "cold".  His death record shows him to be a widower, therefore, we know Polly died before his death . Polly is also noted in the death certificate of her youngest, William, and the will of her father, Vachel Warfield. All that is known of John North to date are the four times he appears in public record. (1) His marriage to Polly Warfield, (2) the 1850 census where he is shown living with his wife and the four older children, (3) his death record, and (4) in the death certificate of the youngest child.

Children of John W. North and Mary "Polly" Warfield

Ann Maria North, born 1840.  She was 11 years of age when she appeared on the 1850 Franklin County census in
the home of her parents. She died as Ann Quire on November 14, 1917. Her death notice appeared in the Lexington
Leader, Friday, November 16, 1917.  Ann married first William Alton Parris (b. 1840) on March 14, 1861 in Franklin

County at the house of Perry Burks (sic.).  Bondsmen were John R, Birk and William P. Birk.  Witnesses were
Henry Flrusume (handwriting illegible) and Thomas Nash.  The couple had one son Joseph Leonard Parris (1862-1926),
buried in Lebanon Cemetery, Franklin County.
Joseph North, was born May 3, 1842 in Franklin County, Kentucky. Joseph was listed on the 1850 Franklin County
census in the home of his parents. He married Eldora Duvall (youngest child of Lott Duvall and Lucy Marshall)

on October 30, 1867. On the 1860 Franklin County census, Joseph was living as a worker, in the home of Jeptha Johnson
and his wife Susan Duvall Johnson.  Joseph North fought on the side of the Union in the Civil War until it ended in 1865.

He was in the Kentucky 22nd Company F.  He was dug in at the Battle of Vicksburg for three months which ended
July 4, 1863.  Upon his return, he married Eldora, Susan's sister. Joseph died on August 5, 1903 at the age of 61
of intestinal problems developed during the Civil War. Joseph and Eldora had ten children. The oldest, Thomas Jefferson
North is my grandfather.  Joseph and Eldora are buried at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Franklin County, Kentucky.
Isaac North, born 1845 probably in Franklin County, Kentucky.  He was 5 years of age when he appeared on the 1850
Franklin County census in the home of his parents.  He is not listed on an 1860 census.  Isaac was named after Polly's
brother, Isaac and although Isaac had four daughters at home no sons, there is no Isaac North.  He would have been 15
at this time and I think they would have been happy to have a young man on the farm that was coming into adulthood.  I
am assuming that Isaac died young, but this is open to revision.
Alexander North, born 1848 probably in Franklin County, Kentucky.  Alex is 2 years of age when he is listed
on the 1850 Franklin County census in the home of his parents.  On the 1860 census, Alexander age 12, is living
with his uncle and namesake, Alexander Warfield. After Warfield's father died in 1857, he moved with many of his

family to Missouri.  Although Alexander North may have moved with them, he evidently returned to Franklin County.
In Franklin County on June 13, 1876, Alexander North married Martha Lee and in 1883  he married Josephine Duvall Marshall,
widow of Humphrey Marshall.

Frankfort Roundabout April 18, 1885
"The widow of Humphrey Marshall was married to Alex North some time over a year ago.  Last Fall they had some
differences and seperated.  In that time Jeff Peter's wife, Rhoda Duvall, a sister of Mrs. North, died leaving a young child
about six weeks old.  Mrs. North was hired to keep the child and in a few days after taking it she let it freeze to death, but
she said it smothered."
Martha Lee must have died between 1876 and 1883.  However, Josephine married W. A. Parris in 1889, who at one time had
been married to our Ann North.  Consequently, Alexander must have died between 1883 and 1889, assuming there was no
divorce.  He is buried at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery next to Joseph, Eldora and William.  The stone reads
Uncle Alexander North, but with no dates.  More on this in the notes of William.

William North, was born March 22, 1854 in Franklin County, Kentucky and died April 20, 1914, according to his
death certificate. William, whose mother and father both died when he was an infant, was living as a member of the

household of John Brawner and his wife, Aunt Ann Warfield Brawner, William's mother's sister.  In the 1880 census he was
living with Peter Brawner, his cousin.  Peter Brawner had signed a marriage bond between Ellen Brewer and William.
Apparently, Ellen Brewer North, at age 25 was living with her parents in 1880 along with her 3 year old daughter, Sarah
North.  It would appear that the marriage did not work out and/or Ellen died, because William died single in 1914.  The
information stated on William's death certificate in 1914 says he died unmarried and of TB.  The informant was Samuel
North, Joseph North's fifth child.  William, too, is buried at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin
County with the stone reading "Uncle William North", but with no dates.  I believe that Sam also ordered the gravestones
for William and Alexander at this time.  He refers to them as "Uncle".  They were his uncles; his father's brothers.  His father
was already dead so he could not ask dates of birth and he did not know them.  However, he did know the names of the
parents, John and Polly.  This was the link that proved all the relationships.  Sam also told his son, Joseph, that there
were three brothers.  This is why I think Isaac died young beccause by 1914, he was lost to memory.

NOTE: With the exception of Joseph, all the children were named after Polly's siblings.  Joseph was the oldest son and
therefore possibly named after John's father.  It should be noted here that at the same time living in Franklin County
was an Ann North, her sister Elizabeth Burke (married) and their brother Joseph.  Ann is the same age as our Ann
and Joseph is a year younger than our Joseph.
This Ann married an Elliott and the birth record of a son shows that she was born in Carroll County, the daughter of
Henry North, a southern plantation owner.
This Joseph married Mary Botkin and they had a son, Lhiam on September 20, 1878.  Lhiam is a very Irish spelling
for the name Liam, which leads me to believe that this family is related to our family.  This family lived just down the road
from our Joseph (census records), so it is certain these are not the same individuals.  This makes the research very
confusing, but there are too many similarities to be totally unrelated.  Most of the Norths in this country originated in
Ireland
