VANDALS
Residents of York street, near Seventh in Newport were considerably excited last evening when it was learned that some one had broken into York Street Congregational Church and destroyed the Bible, hymn books and other church property.
Last Tuesday morning the church was set on fire, but the blaze was discovered in time to prevent serious loss. The fire completely destroyed the fine Bible and the pulpit, chairs, hymn books and some books in the pulpit. A new Bible was purchased and services were held yesterday morning as usual.
In the afternoon the Junior Endeavorers held their regular service and left the church at 4:20. Mr. Cross, the sexton carefully locked the doors and Undertaker Pye saw him do so from his office opposite the church. When A W Bardley, the Superintendent of the Sunday School made an investigation and found that the new Bible was in shreds. The police were notified and the evening services were dispensed with.
The news spread and a crowd gathered at the church and many took torn leaves of the Bible to keep as mementoes. The church recently called Rev George A Vietz, who will begin his labors there in October. Several attempts have been made to burn the church edifice.
