Xavier and Susannah Roth

Information comes from various sources, newspapers, census, marriage and burial records.

Xavier Roth was born in Germany, 16 Dec 1825, the son of Joseph Roth.  He immigrated to the United States leaving LeHavre France and arriving in New Orleans on the Belle Assise on 5 Nov 1853.  He married Susannah Kort 11 Dec 1856 in Newport. Susannah was born 9 Feb 1830 in Kanzem, Rheinland, Prussia, the daughter of Peter Kort and Agnes Wagner.

As the Civil War continued, Lincoln was anxious to end the war after three and a half years.  In February 1865, he authorized a $100 bounty to any able bodied man who joined the infantry for one years. Enticed by the hundred dollars and the increase in pay of sixteen dollars from thirteen a month, Xavier joined the 196th Ohio 25 March 1865.

The 196th Ohio Volunteers Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio and left the state for Winchester Va. on March 28. Xavier marched through the streets of Columbus on his way to the rail road station, in his new Union Blues, presenting a fine appearance, preceded by the band of the 88th Ohio Infantry, who escorted them while playing several finely executed selections to the delight of a large number of citizens who showed their pride with frequent applause.

Xavier's unit was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah.  The regiment reached Charles Town, West Virginia on April 2nd, a distance of five hundred fifty miles.  When they finally got of the railroad cars, the regiment encamped and took a couple of days to rest. The regiment received orders to march up the valley to Winchester.  The Virginia spring weather at that time of year was cold and had already persisted in saturating the unpaved roads making it difficult to travel.

Xavier arrived at Stephenson's Station on April 27th and started pitching their tens by company battle order. Xavier had his call for picket duty for the protection of the regiment keeping watch for anything unusual. Three months were spent here until July, when they moved to Baltimore Md. In the days after the surrender of Lee's forces, the regiments witnessed hundreds of Confederates who came into the union camps to surrender themselves. There he had garrison duty and at Fort Delaware until September and mustered out 11 Sep 1865.
