Women's Christian Temperance Union
Kentucky Post, 17 Nov 1896, page 5
The Women's Christian Temperance Union of the district composing
the temperance unions from Dayton, Bellevue, Alexandria, Highlands, Walton,
Williamstown, Newport, Ludlow and the two temperance societies in Covington, met
at 2 o'clock in the parlors of the YMCA, Covington.
Mrs. Muggeridge, President of the district, was in the chair. After the religious exercises the various societies made their yearly reports. Of the various departments the children's work was though by all to be the most satisfactory. Reports show that temperance literature has been circulated very freely. Over 3660 articles on temperance were distributed in Covington along. All the societies reported an increase in membership.
The reception given in honor of the women who met defeat at the recent election for School Board in Newport was held Monday night in Dr. Katherine Roebuck's office. There were nearly 50 guests present to enjoy the toothsome luncheon served.

WCTU FAVORS THE COMPULSORY TEACHING OF TEMPERANCE IN SCHOOLS
Cincinnati-November 18-The closing day of the thirtieth national convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union found the delegates late in assembling, but interest in the proceedings was unabated. A delegate rising to a question of privilege read a letter from a member of Congress, saying that there was but little prospect of the passage of any bill repealing the anti-canteen law.
Mrs. Lucy Thurman, Michigan (colored) made an interesting report of the progress of the temperance work among the colored people, saying that in Texas the temperance workers of colored blood are among the most effective crusaders against the supremacy of the saloons. The executive committee appropriated for an exhibit at the World's Fair. The report of Mrs. E N Graham, of Maryland general superintendent of the department of work among railroad employees, showed encouraging results. Over 200,000 railroad employees are now wearing the railroad temperance button.
The protest against attacks upon compulsory teaching of temperance and physiology in the public school was adopted.
