The telegraphic news in yesterday's Enquirer, telling of the
death of Major William J Wakeman at Ft Monroe Va. was received with sorrow among
the officers of the Fourth Infantry.
Major Wakeman had held the position of Post Surgeon at this post since 1902. He left about five months ago for Baden Baden Germany, to undergo treatment for kidney trouble. Upon his return to the country a month ago, an extension of leave was granted for 30 days and he went to Ft Monroe, stopping at the Chamberlain Hotel, to further recuperate/
Major Wakeman was 53 years of age and leaves a widow and three sons. He was in Cuba during the Spanish American War and later saw service in Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Prior to the war he was stationed principally on the Western Frontier.
The remains will be shipped to his home near Boston for interment.
