NEWPORT NEWS
RELEASED BY HABEAS CORPUS
It was ascertained a short time since, by his parents, that Wm H
Taylor of Cleveland, was a soldier in Newport Barracks. On Tuesday last his
friends appeared here and sued out a writ of habeas corpus, which was heard by
Mayor Hawkins.
Upon hearing the evidence, young Taylor was released, the Court deciding that the United States could not claim him as a servant.
