NEWPORT
William Pierce, a soldier, was tried in the Criminal Court,
yesterday upon an indictment for burglary in breaking into the house of Thomas
Fowler, City Marshal and stealing a quantity of canned fruit. The jury, after
hearing the evidence retired to their room for the purpose of considering the
case.
They had not been out more than ten minutes when the prisoner got up and left the Court house. After an absence of about two hours, during which time they jury had been discharged on account of being unable to agree on a verdict, Pierce came stalking back into the court room and took his seat by the stove.
In answer to a question from the judge, he stated that he had been to see his mother. The case was continued until the next term, and the prisoner was remanded to jail.
