NEWPORT
AN OLD OFFENDER IN LIMBO-About two years ago a young man named
William Elliott was sent to the Penitentiary from this city for highway robbery.
After serving the State for several months he was pardoned by the Governor and
returned to this vicinity. There were one or two other indictments pending
against him and he was accordingly again arrested, but upon promising to enlist
in the army, was set at liberty.
He enlisted in the First United States Infantry, but deserted in a few months. Returning again to his old haunts hereabouts, he was captured as a deserter by Marshal Fowler and turned over to the officer in command at Newport Barracks. He was kept in close confinement at the Barracks awaiting the decision of a Military Commission in his case, but about two weeks ago managed to escape with ten or twelve other deserters.
Day before yesterday Marshal Fowler arrested Elliott for the second time, and he is now confined in the City Jail. it is probable he will this time be given into the custody of the Cincinnati authorities, as we understand he is charged with serious offense there.
