William Smith, a World War veteran, ended his life last night by firing a bullet into the roof of his mouth in a room at 12 Amelia street, Newport. He was 43 years old and lived with his mother, Mrs. Mary E Smith, 112 W Front street, Newport.

Mr. Smith was pronounced dead upon arrival at Speers Hospitl and Dr. Martin J Sauter, Campbell county coroner, returned a verdict of suicide. He was employed as a WPA worker and also by the city. During the war he enlisted with the Mechanics Third Co of the Pensacola Coast Guard Artillery Corp of the national army. Besides his mother, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Strub and Mrs. Sue Taulbee, both of Newport.

The John J Radel funeral home in Newport has charge of funeral arrangements and the service will be Thursday with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Other arrangements have not been completed.
