William Lickert
Kentucky Post, Monday, 13 November 1899, page 5
William Lickert, a well known farmer of Alexandria and one of the Deputy Sheriffs at the Queen City Jockey Club, had an exciting encounter early Monday morning with a large black Newfoundland dog, which attacked him about six miles from Newport. The canine was mad.
As Lickert was driving along the pike the dog suddenly sprang out. It attempted to bite his horse, but Lickert, assisted by John Wagner of Alexandria, who was with him in the buggy, drove him away from the horse with his buggy whip. The animal then jumped into the buggy, snapping and barking. After a struggle Lickert secured his pistol and killed the brute before it succeeded in biting him or Wagner.
The buggy robe was torn to shreds in the fight. The dog's owner is unknown. It had been roaming the country for the past four or five days and it is not known what damage it may have done. A strict watch will be kept on all animals as it is feared some may have been bitten.
