This respectable German Pioneer of Covington was born on April 17, 1837 in Soegel in the kingdom of Hannover.  He immigrated with his parents to American in 1853.  They settled in Covington and William found work with a rich Frenchman.  He married in 1860 and started a restaurant and a boarding house which he administered for twelve years.

In 1872 he retired from his occupation and had accumulated a good sized fortune.  He now began the Covington Loan Association and worked in it until he died.  Middendorf was because of his kind and affable disposition much liked by his neighbors and was elected in 1874 and several times thereafter to the city council.  For four years he served the city in this position but then because of poor health he had to decline it.

He was ill for two years and died on July 10, 1880.  He left behind his wife and seven children who bemourned (sic) his early death.  Middendorf was one of the founders of the Covington German Pioneer Club and many of the club accompanied his remains to the cemetery.
