LIFE HISTORY
The death of ex-Mayor W H Harton, of Newport cast a gloom over
this city yesterday. Mr. Harton was born and reared in Cincinnati and was 58
years of age. He located in Newport in 1867 and entered the office of the
Gaylord Iron and Pipe Foundry Company. During the panic of 1875 he entered the
retail grocery business and continued until 1885, when he opened up a real
estate and insurance office. He continued active in this business until he was
compelled to take to his bed about a year ago.
During the years 1861 to 1864 he served in the Union Army with the Fifth Ohio Infantry. He was a member of the GAR, the Knights of Pythias and Masons. He was past Department Commander of the Eminent Commander of the Knights Templar. He served several terms in the Newport Council and in 1877 a Democratic Council named him to succeed A S Berry, who had been elected State Senator, as Mayor.
After that as the Republican nominee he was elected three successive terms. He also acted as President of the Courthouse Commission under Judge Helm and Judge Hodge.
The funeral services will take place Wednesday morning and will be in charge of the Newport Masonic fraternity. Services will be held at the house by Rev Dr. Donaldson. The Knights of Pythias and GAR Posts will also participate. The interment will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery.
