Cincinnati Enquirer, 26 September 1895, page 6

William George Cottingham, who wins the solid gold regulation fireman's badge for selling the largest number of tickets among the firemen, was born in Newport, September 18, 1873. He is a son of ex-chief of Police Thomas Cottingham and a fine specimen of physical manhood.

He was appointed in the fire department before reaching his majority, two and a half years ago. Prior to that he was an officer in the patrol service and a member of the police department. Cottingham was as happy as a boy with his first red topped boots, last night when he received the congratulations of his friends.
