PIONEER MERCHANT
William Elden, 80 years of age, and one of Newport's most
respected citizens, passed away at 11 o'clock yesterday morning, after a short
illness. Bronchitis was the cause of death. The deceased was
engaged in the iron and steel business and was one of Cincinnati's pioneer
merchants in this trade. Mr. Elden had been a resident of Newport for the
past 40 years and of late, had been residing in the Posey Flats, where he died.
He leaves three children, T G and Charles Elden of Newport, and Mrs. A L Gahr,
of Mt. Auburn. His wife died last March.
Mr. Elden enjoyed the respect and friendship of all who knew him for his upright and conscientious dealings. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the late residence. Rev McCready of St Paul's P E Church, Newport, officiating. At the conclusion of the services Funeral Director Charles A Smith will ship the remains to Portsmouth, Ohio where they will be buried.
