Walter H Wientjes, USNR, of Newport, has been advanced to gunner's mate third class. It was announced by the Armed Guard Center at New Orleans. Mate Wientjes, who entered the Navy in December 1942, now has served 19 months of sea duty.
The son of Mrs. Matilda Wientjes, 203 Linden avenue, Newport, has served aboard merchant vessels as a Navy gun crewman to protect vital war material and has seen action against enemy aircraft and submarines. He has visited ports in Australia, India, the Persian Gulf and South America.
