Walter was born 12 April 1869 in Cold Spring Ky. the son of George Hamilton Ahlering and Nancy Maria Frances Niles. Walter enlisted in the Second Kentucky Infantry during the Spanish-American war and served during the entire campaign in Puerto Rico. He received a pension for his service on 11 April 1908.
He married his second wife, Arabella Roberta Miles 7 Feb 1946 in Mason Co Ky. She was his father's fourth wife.
