Vivian and Charlotte Daniel

Vivian A Daniel was born in 1790 in Morning View, near the Licking River in Campbell County, Ky. the son of William A Daniel and Mary Catherine Thomason. He farmed his whole life as Campbell County was very much a wilderness at that time. He enlisted in the Corn Stalk Militia 19 Jan 1801.

Charles Daniel conveys to Charles & Vivian, sons of his son William, his negro slave, Charlotte in trust. Vivian's will conveys his interest to Charlotte.

Charles Daniel Senr. of the County of Campbell and State of Kentucky for and in consideration of the natural Love and affection which I bear towards my son Vivian Daniel of the County aforesaid and for in consideration of his kind attention and services towards me and for the further Sum of one dollar give my Two negro men to wit Phil & Sam. Phil being about 45 years old and Sam about 40 years old both being slaves for life. Charles X Daniel Sr.

At some point Vivian and Charlotte entered into a common law marriage. Marriage between whites and African Americans was prohibited in Kentucky at this time. Charlotte may have felt she had no other choice and by entering into this arrangement, she and her children would be safe from being sold. Because of the space of several years between known children, it is assumed Charlotte had more children but they might not have survived.

Vivian Daniel died in 1857 at his home near Grants Lick. He was buried in the Daniel Family Cemetery. Charlotte died in 1855 in Grants Lick and was buried next to Vivian in the Daniel Family Cemetery. After Vivian died all his children by Charlotte left Campbell County. Since it was still a slave state and the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act had been passed, they were not safe from being sold.
