Kentucky Post, Friday, 27 July 1928, page 1

The Ohio River gave up Friday to the body of Troy Burden, 15, its first Campbell co. victim in 1928. Burden, who lived with his aunt, Mrs. Minnie Worthington, 127 W Fourth st. Newport, was drowned late Thursday when seized with cramps while swimming in the Ohio River at the mouth of the Licking River. The boy was swimming about 25 feet from the shore, when it is believed, he became exhausted and suffered a cramp. He sank below the surface despite the efforts of companions to save him.

John Herron and Ollie Powers, Newport patrolmen, who investigated learned Charles Clark, 14, of 11 E Fourth st; Edward Riley, 14 of 216 W Southgate st and Leo Johnson, 14 of 413 Central av. were swimming with Burden at the time. Riley seized Troys arm as the lad went under and himself was pulled below the surface. He was forced to abandon his efforts, he said when the drowning boy attempted to get a "death grip" on him. Clarke also went to the aid of the victim and suffered a cut foot in attempting to rescue him. The Covington Fire Department life saving squad responded to an alarm with a pulmoter and were in readiness to attempt resuscitation if he was brought to the surface.

The cries of Burden's companions attracted a large throng to the rive bank and rivermen, firemen and spectators dragged the spot where he went under with the grappling hooks, but failed to recover the body.
