Death of Thomas D Kennedy
A brief paragraph in our last issue prepared our readers of the Journal for the announcement of the death of Thomas D Kennedy, Esq. This event occurred on Tuesday last at the family residence on the Lexington Pike near this city (Covington). Thus has passed away one of the oldest and best citizens of Kenton County. Mr. Kennedy was born in 1795 in Cincinnati; Cincinnati was at that time a mere village. There was but one house on the site now occupied by the city of Covington.
While the subject of this sketch was yet an infant, the family moved to this side of the river. Here Mr. Kennedy attained his majority, here he spent all the useful years of his long life, and here at a ripe age he has been gathered to his fathers. He was for 70 years an eye witness of the wonderful transformation which has been going on, step by step, day by day on the banks of the Ohio River, in sight of the place of his birth.
Mr. Kennedy was noted for many excellent traits of character. A man of clear judgment and very clear convictions, he was zealous in whatever cause he espoused, and strongly attached to his friends. He served his country as a soldier in the War of 1812 and endured the hardships of the northern campaign.
In the old days Mr. Kennedy was a Henry Clay Whig and the great Kentuckian had no more great friend than he. In 1860 like 1000s of other old Whigs, he united with the Democratic party and voted its ticket to the last. Mr. Kennedy rather declined than sought public office, yet in the course of his life, he held many important trusts. At an early day he was Superintendent of the Ferry at this point. Subsequently for many years, he was engineer of the Covington and Lexington Turnpike and under his management it was pronounced one of the best roads in the West. He was for some time the Director of the Covington Branch of the Farmers Bank. The duties of all these trusts were discharged with the strictest fidelity.
The wife of his youth preceded him by many
years in the voyage across the dark river. His children are honored
members of the community of which he lived so long.
