IN ORPHANS BRIGADE
Thomas J Surran, 78 years old, Civil War veteran, died yesterday
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Smith of 1608 Freeman avenue, of infirmities
incident to old age. He formerly lived in Newport, KY. for many years.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Surran enlisted in the Confederate army, joining the Fourth Kentucky infantry, which was know as the "Orphans Brigade." He served throughout the war.
For the past 35 years Mr. Surran was employed in the service of the L and N Railroad in various capacities. Surviving him are three children, George Surran of Newport, Mrs. Catherine Crothy and Mrs. Smith, wife of a physician.
