Kentucky Post, Monday, 31 January 1910, page 5

Capt. Thomas Wingate, 76, well known steamboat man on the Ohio River, died Sunday at his residence, Ninth and Dayton sts. Newport after an illness of one hour. Capt. Wingate was sitting at the dinner table when he complained of feeling ill. He went into his bed chamber and laid down on his bed. The members of his family were attracted to the room by his moaning. Several physicians in the neighborhood were summoned and it was decided to perform an operation at once, which was done.

After the operation the man never rallied and died while still under the anesthetic. One of the physicians that performed the operation stated that Capt. Wingate was suddenly stricken with a disarrangement of the intestines. He is survived by a widow and several grown children.
