Murder of Young Thomas King
In Newport yesterday, during the preliminary examination of three
men, Robert Connelly, John Dokes and John Dunwoodie, were charged with the
willful murder of Thomas King. The prosecutor stated that he desired a warrant
issued for the arrest of Officer Barney King. Officer King was present and
stepped forward and was at once place under arrest.
When the father of the murdered boy was asked to swear to the warrant upon which Officer King was to be held, he refused to do so and Barney was then told to step aside, as there was nothing to hold him on.
The first witness called was Kit King, the father of the boy who was shot, but he knew nothing of the murder. Wm Engle was the next witness called. He heard four shots and saw Connelly shoot with a pistol; saw Dunwoodie also shooting. Simon Tracey was next sworn in but he knew nothing. John O'Brien was called and soon let go. Wm Cottingham saw Connelly shooting and heard nine shots.
Officer Barney King, Emma Dumal, Adam Engle, Emma Lawhorn and Wm McCleve were called. McCleve said Barney King fired two shots at some men who were running away. Tommie Shannon saw young Tommie King fall, exclaiming he had been shot by "Fane" Connelly. Ding Walsh stated that Connelly had shot at him three times. Colonel Nelson then moved for a dismissal of Dokes and Dundwoodie. In regard to Dokes the motion was sustained, but Connelly and Dunwoodie were held in $2000 bail until Friday morning when the testimony for the defense will be heard.
