LOOKING FOR A BOER AND HIS SAILBOAT
Thomas Hoskins, river man and owner of launches and sailboats at
the foot on Monmouth st. Newport, left this morning for Louisville in search of
a sailboat which he claims was taken away by a man giving his name as "John
Tuffeer."
Hoskins told police that Tuffeer represented himself as a Boer, who said he had served in the South African War. He rented the boat from Hoskins several days ago and failing to return Hoskins began making inquires.
He learned that the boat was seen 100 miles down the river and that Tuffeer had his wife and children aboard. Hoskins says that the stranger was an expert sailor and handled the sailboat like one who knew his business. He further learned that Tuffeer had been employed at a Cincinnati safe factory. The boat is valued at $350.
