Thomas Hewetson, 71, of 550 East Third st. Newport Ky. died Sunday after a few hours illness. While standing at Third and Saratoga sts. Newport yesterday afternoon he suddenly collapse. He was taken to his home in an automobile and died shortly before 7 pm.
He was a past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows and a Civil War Veteran. He had charge of the pontoon bridge across the Ohio when Morgan's raiders threatened Cincinnati. He leaves five daughters and a son.

While standing at the corner of Third and Saratoga sts. Newport, yesterday, Thomas Hewetson, 71, was seized with an attack of vertigo and collapsed. Patrolman Reilly and Dr. Stine removed him to his home, 550 East Third st. in an automobile, where it was thought at first that his illness was not serious. Later in the day he suffered a sinking spell and he passed away at 7 pm.
Hewetson had resided in Campbell Co. nearly all his life. A brother, Robert Hewetson, was killed by a train about two months ago. He was a prominent Odd Fellow, having been Past Grand Master of Kentucky for some time, and also had been State Treasurer of the order. He was head of the widows and orphans fund of the order.
During the Civil War Hewetson was in charge of the pontoon bridge across the Ohio River, when Morgan's Raiders threatened Cincinnati. He was a widower, his wife having died about 15 years ago. Five daughters, Miss Mary Hewetson and Mrs. Charles Surran of Newport; Mrs. Samuel Moyer of Cincinnati and Mrs. Frank Hayman of Dietrich Idaho, and one son, Joseph Hewestson survive him.
