Susan Sines

Cincinnati Enquirer, Sunday, 31 May 1925, page 23

Mrs. Susan Sines, one of the first co-workers with Susan B Anthony in the fight for women suffrage, and widow of Xenophon Sines, City Clerk of Newport Ky. died at the age of 101 this morning in her home in Washington DC. Her death, which followed an illness of several weeks, was ascribed to kidney trouble. Despite illness during her final years, Mrs. Sines maintained an interest in literature and current events and one of her last pleasures was 'listening in' on a radio concert.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm in the home of the decedent. The temporary burial is to be in Glenwood Cemetery and later the body will be removed to Newport Ky. for permanent burial besides that of her husband.

Mrs. Sines moved to Washington DC from Newport in 1890, after the death of her husband. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Mira Sines of Washington DC, who was a classmate of Chief Justice William Howard Taft at the University of Cincinnati and former Assistant Postmistress of Newport. Ill health will prevent her from traveling to Kentucky for the final burial.

Mrs. Mary L Ross, another daughter, was appointed Postmistress of Newport, by President Rutherford B Hayes. She died 10 years ago and is buried in Newport. She was one of the first women in Kentucky to be placed in charge of a post office. Both he and her sister participated in the early campaigns for woman suffrage.
