NEWPORT
Stella Otting, an inmate of the Campbell County Protestant Orphan
Asylum, was taken from that institute by a woman accompanied by a man yesterday
afternoon. The Superintendent of the institution claims that the child was
taken by her sister, who formerly was an inmate of the home. The little girl is
the daughter of Lewis Otting, who placed the child in the institution when his
wife died.
Yesterday afternoon a young couple visited the home and had some words with the Superintendent. In order to avoid trouble the Superintendent, accompanied by his wife, went into the house. Seizing a favorable opportunity, afforded by their retreat, the woman took the little girl's hand and made off with her.
At the home last night the officials were desirous of avoiding publicity in regard to the incident and claimed that the woman would bring back the child shortly. Mr. Otting formerly resided in Newport, but is at present residing in the West End of Cincinnati. An attempt was made to locate him last night, but his address could not be learned.
