Silver Grove
Silver Grove is located along the Ohio River and Kentucky 8 just
north of Melbourne. It was developed as a railroad town by the C&O
Railroad. A railroad roundhouse was constructed, and plans for a town announced
by 1911.
Silver Grove Public School-was first held in a house in 1911. The railroad donated land for a school to be built in 1928 which was a two story brick building. The 1937 Flood caused records to be lost. Additions were added in 1959, elementary-1969, Middle School, and High School-1979. The old building closed and was torn down in 1986.
By 1914 the city had 100 homes and 400 residents, almost all railroad workers or employees of businesses tied to the railroad. The railroad had a direct hand in the operations of the city.
Before the creation of the city, a resort picnic grounds was located there. Its grounds were known as Phoenix Grove, but they were once known as Silver Grove. That may be where the city got its name.

Most of the homes in the city suffered water damage during the 1937 flood and again in the 1997 flood. Beginning in the 1940s the railroad began to pull out of the city, first by turning over the operations of the city to its citizens and then later by closing most of its operations at the Silver Grove rail yard.
Silver Grove was incorporated as a city on
December 29, 1950 and today has a
population of 1100.
