Sergeant John D Moore, of the Third Infantry Band, assisted by a woman he claims is his wife, made a daring and successful escape from Ft Thomas at 7 pm Sunday night. He was awaiting trial for alleged desertion and Sunday night had been taken to the mess room to assist in cleaning after supper.
At a favorable opportunity he jumped from a window and started on a run. The entire guard was called out and the sentries fired several shots but Moore got away in the darkness. It is said he appeared at the Midway an hour later and changed his clothes to civilian attire, furnished by a woman and then made his way toward Alexandria
Moore was arrested about three weeks ago by Constable Parks in Newport on a charge of having assaulted a bill collector named Lansdowne. He had not been tried and deserted from the army to escape prosecution. He was arrested in Cincinnati April 6 after having attempted to commit suicide. He was taken to Ft Thomas where he was awaiting trial.
