Information comes from various sources, newspapers, census, marriage and burial records.

Sebastian Karn was born 6 Nov 1846 in Ober Klinger, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, the son of Sebastian and Anna Maria  (Stork). The family immigrated to the United States in 1854 and settled in Pittsburg, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.  It was from here that Karn enlisted in the Union Army when the Civil War started serving in the 6th Regiment Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery 212th Volunteers.  His regiment was mostly composed of men from the counties of Allegheny, Butler, Westmorland, Fayette, Washington and Lawrence, who rendezvoused at Camp Reynolds, Pittsburg and were mustered into the U. S. service during the first half of Sep 1864, for one year.

On Sep 17, Karn and his regiment left for Washington, where they was assigned to the 2nd brigade of DeRussy's division, then garrisoning the defenses of the capital.  On the 29th Karn and his regiment was detached to perform railroad guard duty on the Orange & Alexandria and Manassas, with headquarters at Fairfax Court House.

Karn was also engaged in the battle at Burke's Station VA on 13 Oct 1864.

After this battle, Karn returned to guard duty on the Orange & Alexandria and Manassas until about the middle of November when he returned to the defenses of Washington. Thus far he had served as infantry, but he and his regiment were now drilled as artillery and soon became proficient in this arm of the service.

Karn remained in the forts about Washington until June 13, 1865 when he was mustered out at Fort Ethan Allen, returned to Camp Reynolds, where he was finally paid and discharged on the 17th.
