FORMER NEWPORT KY


NEW YORK-November 24-Samuel Winston, a sugar broker, of his city, died early this morning at his home, 121 East Seventy-first street. He was born in Newport Ky. in 1833. His family was an old and distinguished one. His father was an officer in the Continental Army and his grandfather, Major T Martin, ws one of the members of the Society of Cincinnati. He was a Confederate veteran.

Mr. Winston came to New York in 1869 holding a position in the wholesale grocery firm of Thurber & Co. Later he became a sugar broekr. His earliest and closest friend was J G Carlisle ex-Speaker of the House. His wife died three years ago.

Samuel Winston was the son of Samuel and Mary Winston, late of Newport. Mr. Winston was a brother of Mrs. Berry, mother of Mrs. R W Nelson and Mrs. ex-Governor Stevenson. Mr. Winston was born and raised in Newport and resided in this city until he was about 25 years of age.
