Dr. S O Griggs, 209 Sixth ave. Dayton Ky. started practicing medicine 27 years ago in the little Clermont co. river town of Neville. He used a horse and buggy then. Two years later he moved to Dayton where he has been practicing ever since. When automobiles came into general use Dr. Griggs replaced his horse and buggy with a machine. On last Sep 27 the doctor purchased his first airplane from the Queen City Flying Service. Inc. Lunken Field, an open three place Waco. Three weeks before Dr. and Mrs. Griggs, son Donald, had entered the service of this company as a pilot and instructor. They had bought the machine primarily that he might build up his air hours. Soon they became air minded themselves.

The last day of February Donald took his mother and Miss Emma Harff, Avondale, to the Waco factory at Troy O. It was 20 above zero and cold. By the time the party arrived at Troy the tips of their noses and their hands were numb. The result was the purchase of a new closed ship. The Waco four passenger cabin was bought by Dr. Griggs on March 23. Here they found all the comfort of their automobile. Soft cushions and heater, glass enclosed interior changed their ideas about cross country flying.

With her son at the controls and Miss Harff as guest, Mrs. Griggs took off from Lunken Field at 10:30 arriving in Indianapolis an hour later. The call was made and the return 100 mile trip was made in just 40 minutes with the aid of a stiff tail wind. As a result of this and other trips, Mrs. Griggs has become an aviation enthusiast. Donald is making aviation his profession. Up to April 3 he had 385 hours flying time. He is 23, started flying on June 3, 1930 with the old Embry Riddle Co and a month later made his first solo trip.

Young Griggs in August 1930 started with the Curtis Wright Flying Service at Port Columbus in September. He received his transport license May 18, 1931. The doctor wanted him to study medicine after he graduated from Dayton High School and sent him over to the University of Cincinnati for a year. Donald always wanted to go into aviation. He was always interested in machinery and mechanics.
