On April 27, 1818 in Campbell County, in the state of Kentucky, the said pensioner at the age of 82 years appeared in open court and upon his oath stated and swore that he had served for a tour of three years. He had enlisted to serve in the company under the command of Captain Abraham Shepherd in Berkley County in the state of Virginia in July 1776. He served in the capacity of a private soldier on the line of the state of Virginia under the command of Lt. Colonel Collins. And he remained in that capacity until the taking of Fort Washington in New York in 1776, at which time he was transferred to the 11th Regiment under the command of Colonel Daniel Morgan, and into the company under the command of Captain Gabriel Long. He had been honorably discharged in August 1779 by General William Washington at Smith’s Cove in New York after having served his country for 3 years.
The affidavit of Thomas Mitchell was also given at the same time and the same place as the foregoing. The said deponent stated and swore that he had been both well and favorably acquainted in said county and state both before and since the enlistment of Samuel Davis in the month of July 1776. The said deponent further stated and swore that the above declaration of the said pensioner contained the truth.
The affidavit of David Lewis and John McCabe was also given at the same time and the same place as the foregoing. The said deponents stated and swore that at that time and in the said county and state they were both well and favorably acquainted with the said applicant for a pension. Samuel Davis and the deponents stated in addition that they resided as neighbors. The deponents further added that the said Samuel Davis was in reduced circumstances and did need the assistance of his country for his support.
On July 24, 1820 in Campbell County Kentucky the said applicant for a pension, Samuel Davis at the age of 84 years again appeared in open court and upon his oath stated and swore that he had first enlisted in the state of Virginia in the year 1776 to serve in the company under the command of Captain Abraham Shepherd and in the regiment under the command of Colonel Hugh Stephenson. He stated that he had been honorably discharged at West Point in New York. He said that he was by occupation a farmer and that he had neither family nor property. The said applicant, Samuel Davis was on the Kentucky Roll of Pensions at the rate of $8 per month to commence on April 17, 1818. His certificate of pension for that amount was issued on September 16, 1819 and it was then sent to Daniel Mays, Esquire.
